Unit 5 Geology Day 5: Weathering and Erosion Field Study

Geology Day 5
Weathering and Erosion Field Study

Mission: Identify possible sign of chemical weathering, mechanical weathering, and erosion around KIPP Courage and Landrum Middle School.

Mission Objectives:

1) Work with table group.

2) Do not go past the boundaries! (Fence and New Gym)

3) Find at least five signs of weathering or erosion – don’t be afraid to make a mistake.

4) Act like a professional Geologist.

More Weathering Practice

Decide if the following descriptions are examples of mechanical weathering or chemical weathering. Write “MW” for mechanical weathering or “CW”  for chemical weathering in the blank at the left.

You will probably NOT KNOW all of the vocabulary. You should take what you know about mechanical and chemical weathering to decide.

_________________1. Mosses growing on the surface of rocks, producing pits in the rocks.
_________________2. Limestone dissolved by carbonic acid.
_________________3. The rusting of minerals that contain iron.
_________________4. Animal burrows dug in rock that let in water and air.
_________________5. Repeated freezing and thawing of water that cracks rock.
_________________6. The action of water, salt, and air on car fenders and panels.
_________________7. Acids from plant roots which break up rocks.
_________________8. Formation of potholes in streets during severe winters.
_________________10. Lifted sections of sidewalk along tree-lined streets.
_________________11. A small rock falling from a cliff.
_________________12. Feldspar mixing with acidic groundwater and producing clay minerals.
_________________13. Decaying plants dissolving some of the minerals in rocks.
_________________14. Tree roots cracking the concrete foundation of a house.
Pick one and explain why it is mechanical or chemical weathering.
#_________ is ______________________________ weathering because _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
